Strength training promotes a IIX-to-IIA shift in myosin heavy chain (MHC) composition, likely due to changes in sarcoplasmic [Ca2+ ] which are sensed by CaMKII. Sarcoplasmic [Ca2+ ] is in part regulated by sarcolipin (SLN), a small protein that when overexpressed in rodents stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis and a fast-to-slow fiber type shift. The purpose of this study was to determine whether CaMKII and SLN are involved in muscle phenotype and performance changes elicited by strength training. Twenty-two men followed an 8-week velocity-based resistance training program using the full squat exercise while monitoring repetition velocity. Subjects were randomly assigned to two resistance training programs differing in the repetition velocity loss allowed in each set 20% (VL20) vs 40% (VL40). Strength training caused muscle hypertrophy, improved 1RM and increased total CaMKII protein expression, particularly of the δD isoform. see more Phospho-Thr287 -CaMKII δD expression increased only in VL40 (+89%), which experienced greater muscle hypertrophy, and a reduction in MHC-IIX percentage. SLN expression was increased in VL20 (+33%) remaining unaltered in VL40. The changes in phospho-Thr287 -CaMKII δD were positively associated with muscle hypertrophy and the number of repetitions during training, and negatively with the changes in MHC-IIX and SLN. Most OXPHOS proteins remained unchanged, except for NDUFB8 (Complex I), which was reduced after training (-22%) in both groups. The amount of fatigue allowed in each set critically influences muscle CaMKII and SLN responses and determines muscle phenotype changes. With lower intra-set fatigue, the IIX-to-IIA MHC shift is attenuated.Social movements pushing for social change are often met with reactionary counter-movements that defend the status quo. The present research examined this interplay by focusing on the role of racial majority group members claiming collective psychological ownership. We examined collective ownership that stems from being native to the land and from being founders of the nation. Study 1 found that in Malaysia, the Malay majority group endorsed more native ownership than Chinese and Indian minorities, which in turn predicted greater threat in response to protests demanding electoral reforms and subsequently greater support for a reactionary pro-government movement. Situated in the United States, Study 2 found that the more that White Americans endorsed founder ownership beliefs, the more they reported negative attitudes towards the Black Lives Matter protests, which in turn predicted more support for White nationalistic counter-protests. This effect was stronger among White people compared to people of colour. Study 3 examined both founder and native ownership in Australia. Founder (but not native) ownership beliefs predicted more negative attitudes towards Invasion Day protests, which subsequently predicted more support for counter-protests defending Australia Day celebrations. Implications of culture-specific beliefs about collective ownership for social movement research are discussed.
Enteral feeding tubes are associated with their most serious complications in the days and weeks after insertion, but there are limited published data in the literature on late complications and the implications for the healthcare service.
This is a retrospective observational study of attendances to a UK hospital emergency department (ED), with enteral tube complications as the primary reason for attendance.
Over 24 months, 139 attendances were recorded. Dislodged tubes and blocked tubes accounted for the majority of complications and subsequent admissions, with a mixture of enteral tube types being associated with both. Thirty-five percent of patients were admitted, and the average healthcare cost per attendance was $1071.
Enteral tube complications can place a hidden burden on the patient, the ED, and healthcare costs. More work on education and supporting caregivers to resolve problems themselves could reduce the burden on busy EDs.

Cyanobacterial biofilms are ubiquitous and have potential for treatment of wastewater and sustainable production of biofuels. But the underlying mechanisms regulating cyanobacterial biofilm formation are unclear. Here, we report the solution NMR structure of a protein, Se0862, conserved across diverse cyanobacterial species and involved in regulation of biofilm formation in the cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942. Se0862 is a class α+β protein with ααββββαα topology and roll architecture, consisting of a four-stranded β-sheet that is flanked by four α-helices on one side. Conserved surface residues constitute a hydrophobic pocket and charged regions that are likely also present in Se0862 orthologs.The relatively large primary olfactory center of the insect brain, the antennal lobe (AL), contains several heterogeneous neuronal types. These include projection neurons (PNs), providing olfactory information to higher-order neuropils via parallel pathways, and local interneurons (LNs), which provide lateral processing within the AL. In addition, various types of centrifugal neurons (CNs) offer top-down modulation onto the other AL neurons. By performing iontophoretic intracellular staining, we collected a large number of AL neurons in the moth, Helicoverpa armigera, to examine the distinct morphological features of PNs, LNs, and CNs. We characterize 190 AL neurons. These were allocated to 25 distinct neuronal types or sub-types, which were reconstructed and placed into a reference brain. In addition to six PN types comprising 15 sub-types, three LN and seven CN types were identified. High-resolution confocal images allowed us to analyze AL innervations of the various reported neurons, which demonstrated that all PNs innervating ventroposterior glomeruli contact a protocerebral neuropil rarely targeted by other PNs, that is the posteriorlateral protocerebrum.
