    Phytophthora root rot is a destructive disease of rhododendron, causing substantial losses of this nursery crop in infested field and container production areas. Historically, Phytophthora cinnamomi was considered the main causal agent of the disease. However, a recent survey of soilborne Phytophthora species from symptomatic rhododendrons in Oregon revealed that P. plurivora is more common than P. cinnamomi and that several other Phytophthora species may also be involved. We investigated the ability of the five most abundant species from the survey to cause root rot P. PF-573228 order plurivora, P. cinnamomi, P. pini, P. pseudocryptogea, and P. cambivora. Three to four isolates were selected for each species from across six Oregon nurseries. Media of containerized Rhododendron catawbiense ‘Boursault’ was infested with single isolates in a randomized complete block design in a greenhouse. Phytophthora cinnamomi, P. pini, and P. plurivora rapidly caused ≥ 90% incidence of severe root rot while P. pseudocryptogea caused more moderate disease with 46% incidence of severe root rot. Phytophthora cambivora failed to produce enough inoculum and was used at a lower inoculum density than the other four species, but occasionally caused severe root rot (5% incidence). No differences in virulence were observed among isolates of same species, except for one isolate of P. plurivora that caused less disease than other P. plurivora isolates. This study demonstrates that all five Phytophthora species, which were representative of 94% of the survey isolates, are capable of causing severe root rot and plant death, but that not all species are equally virulent.

    To investigate the prevalence of poor bone quality in patients requiring spine surgery through comprehensive evaluation with bone mass density (BMD), trabecular bone score (TBS), FRAX, and vitamin D status.

    we prospectively recruited patients of > 50 years old candidates for lumbar or cervical spine fusion surgery at our institution. Recorded data were demographic, body mass index (BMI), risk factors for osteoporosis, daily calcium intake, FRAX score, disability index for lumbar and cervical spine, and VAS for pain. Serum 25 OH vitamin D, BMD using DXA, and TBS was also evaluated.

    A total of 104 patients were recruited, osteoporosis by BMD was detected in 9.6%, and osteopenia in 34.6% of patients. 69.4% of patients with osteopenia had a degraded or partially degraded bone microarchitecture by TBS.Low levels of vitamin D were detected in 79.8% of patients. Increased pain was associated with low BMD levels. Adding TBS to BMD for the determination of bone strength resulted in 33.7% of patients with poor bone quality. Lastly, the combination of BMD, TBS, and FRAX revealed 37,5% of patients with poor bone quality.

    Poor bone quality and low vitamin D levels are quite common among patients aged ≥ 50 years undergoing spine surgery. DXA alone seems not enough for preoperative identification of impaired bone quality cases. FRAX is useful for identifying high-risk patients and TBS is a valuable complement to DXA by adding the dimension of bone quality.

    The primary aim was to determine the influence of COVID-19 on 30-day mortality following hip fracture. Secondary aims were to determine predictors of COVID-19 status on presentation and later in the admission; the rate of hospital acquired COVID-19; and the predictive value of negative swabs on admission.

    A nationwide multicentre retrospective cohort study was conducted of all patients presenting with a hip fracture to 17 Scottish centres in March and April 2020. Demographics, presentation blood tests, COVID-19 status, Nottingham Hip Fracture Score, management, length of stay, and 30-day mortality were recorded.

    In all, 78/833 (9.4%) patients were diagnosed with COVID-19. The 30-day survival of patients with COVID-19 was significantly lower than for those without (65.4% vs 91%; p < 0.001). Diagnosis of COVID-19 within seven days of admission (likely community acquired) was independently associated with male sex (odds ratio (OR) 2.34, p = 0.040, confidence interval (CI) 1.04 to 5.25) and symptoms of CVID-19 in hospital may guide pathways for isolating or shielding patients respectively. The present community-based study aims to estimate the prevalence of HIV-related discrimination in the past 12 months in HIV-related care, comparing general and key populations in Brazil. A total of 30 PLWHA were trained to recruit participants among their peer networks; 1768 PLWHA participated in the study and were asked if, in the past 12 months when seeking HIV-specific healthcare, they had experienced discrimination from health facility staff because of their HIV status.
