    Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) predict health-compromising behaviors such as substance use. However, few studies have examined the association between ACE and prescription drug misuse among young adults-a growing public health concern. College students are especially vulnerable to prescription drug misuse due to social and academic stressors. This study investigated associations between ACE and prescription drug misuse (e.g., antidepressants, opiates, sedatives and stimulants) among a diverse college population, as well as gender and racial/ethnic variations in these associations.

    Data are from the 2018 American College Health Association’s National College Health Assessment II (N = 3899) at a large, diverse university in California. Logistic regression models assessed the association between ACE and prescription drug misuse adjusting for gender and race/ethnicity and explored gender and racial/ethnic differences in the ACE/prescription drug misuse association.

    ACE was associated with misuse of aregarding the importance of ACE screening and the use of campus-based prevention programs. PHZ was firstly identified as a competitive inhibitor of sodium-glucose co-transporters-2 (SGLT2); however, its low bioavailability makes it hard to fully explain its pharmacological mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate the ameliorating effect of PHZ on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity via modulating the “gut microbiota-barrier axis”. Firstly, C57BL/6 J mice were fed a normal chow diet (NCD) or HFD coadministered with or without PHZ for 12 weeks. Our results showed that PHZ supplementation significantly reduced HFD-induced body weight gain (P less then .001), alleviated metabolic disorders (MDs) like insulin resistance (P less then .001) and elevation of serum lipopolysaccharides (LPS) (P less then .001), attenuated HFD-induced gut microbiota alterations, enhanced short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production (P less then .001), and inhibited fecal LPS production (P less then .001). To investigate the role of the fecal microbiota in the observed beneficial effects, a fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment was performed by transplanting the feces of the four groups of mice (as donor mice) daily collected from the fourth week to a new batch of acclimatized HFD-fed mice. Our results confirmed that feeding the gut contents of the PHZ-modulated mice could attenuate HFD-induced MDs, accompanied by enhanced glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) secretion (P less then .001) and restoration of HFD-induced damage in the gut epithelial barrier. This study has provided evidence that the “gut microbiota-barrier axis” was an alternative target for the anti-obesity effect of PHZ. This work has also provided an explanation for the high efficacy of PHZ despite the low bioavailability, and PHZ holds great potential to be developed as a functional food ingredient.

    Sexual minorities (e.g. lesbian, gay, bisexual) are at increased risk for alcohol use disorder (AUD) compared to heterosexuals. The minority stress model postulates that disparities in AUD stem, in part, from stress specific to sexual minorities (e.g. heterosexism). However, little research has examined psychophysiological markers of minority stress reactivity and how psychophysiological stress reactivity is associated with lifetime minority stress and alcohol use among sexual minorities. Our present study was conducted to investigate the LQ metabolites in rats urine, faeces and plasma using UHPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap mass spectrometer in both positive and negative ion modes. Meanwhile, post-acquisition data-mining methods including high-resolution extracted ion chromatogram (HREIC), multiple mass defect filters (MMDFs), neutral loss fragments (NLFs) and diagnostic product ions (DPIs) were utilised to screen and identify LQ metabolites from HR-ESI-MS to ESI-MS n stage. As a result, a total of 49 metabolites were detected and characterised unambiguously or tentatively. These metabolites were presumed to generate through glucuronidation, sulfation, deglucosylation, dehydrogenation, methylation, hydrogenation, hydroxylation, ring cleavage and their composite reactions. Our results not only provided novel and useful data to better understand the biological activities of LQ, but also indicated that the proposed strategy was reliable for a rapid discovery and identification drug-related constituents in vivo.

    Visual acuity (VA) testing is a vital screening tool for the assessment of ocular function. The coronavirus 2019 pandemic has caused an immediate need for synchronous telemedicine in all specialties, including ophthalmology. While a plethora of mobile VA applications exist, there is no consensus as to what technology can accurately and reproducibly measure a patient’s vision at home.

    A systematic literature search was performed in April 2020 using PubMed, Embase and Medline, identifying English publications from 2010 to 2020 on remote VA tests 4338 articles were identified and 14 were ultimately included in the review.

    Of those 14, the highest quality studies, best reproducibility and correlation with in-clinic acuities measured were found using the Peek Acuity application.
