Evaluate the efficacy of two courses of vincristine and topotecan (VT) neoadjuvant intravenous chemotherapy in reducing retinoblastoma tumor volumes.
Twenty-seven patients with previously untreated, bilateral advanced retinoblastoma who were enrolled on a prospective treatment protocol (NCT00186888). Patients underwent high-resolution ophthalmic imaging at diagnosis and were reimaged following treatment with two cycles of VT. Tumor height and diameter were measured before and after treatment, and tumor volumes were calculated. Statistical methods for dependent samples were used.
Imaging was completed for 75 tumors in 23 patients (43 eyes). After two cycles of VT, median decrease in tumor height was 47% and median decrease in tumor diameter was 22%. Median decrease in estimated tumor volume was 74%. Sixty-one of 75 tumors demonstrated >50% reduction in tumor volume. Distance from the optic nerve (=0 vs >0), age (<4 vs >4months), macular location (within vs outside), and time (pre- and posttrewere significant predictors of treatment response.
We obtained four microbial isolates from soil exposed to forest fire and evaluated their potential bioremediation activity when combined with a biosurfactant-producing bacterial strain for the decontamination of wildfire-impacted soil polluted with high-molecular-weight (HMW) hydrocarbons.
We established mesocosm trials to compare three bioremediation strategies natural attenuation, bioaugmentation and biostimulation. Chemical analysis, culture-dependent and culture-independent methods were used to evaluate the bioremediation efficiency and speciation of the microbial cenoses based on these approaches. After treatment for 90days, bioaugmentation removed 75·2-75·9% of the HMW hydrocarbons, biostimulation removed 63·2-69·5% and natural attenuation removed ~22·5%. Hydrocarbon degradation was significantly enhanced in the mesocosm supplemented with the biosurfactant-producing bacterial strain after 20 and 50days of treatment compared to the other bioremediation strategies.

The primary objective of the present study was to produce a data set comprising marine Co toxicity data that could be used by both the European Union and the United States to determine a predicted-no-effect concentration and ambient water quality criteria, respectively. Ten marine species, ranging from algae to fish, were subjected to chronic Co toxicity tests that were designed to meet international water quality testing standards. Chronic 10% effect concentration values ranged from a low of 1.23 µg dissolved Co/L for red algae (Champia parvula) to a high of 31 800 µg dissolved Co/L for sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus). The species sensitivity ranking for chronic marine Co exposure was as follows (from most to least sensitive) C. parvula > Neanthes arenaceodentata (polychaete) > Americamysis bahia (mysid shrimp) > Skeletonema costatum (marine diatom) > Dendraster excentricus (sand dollar) > Mytilus galloprovincialis (mussel) > Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (purple sea urchin) > Crassostrea gigas (oyster) > Dunaliella tertiolecta (marine flagellate) > C. variegatus.
