    The questionnaire Hospital for Special Surgery Shoulder Surgery Expectations Survey (HSS-ES) is a tool used to assess the preoperative expectations of patients with shoulder pathologies. The purpose of this study is to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Spanish version of the HSS-ES questionnaire to assess preoperative expectations in Spanish-speaking patients.

This report details a case in which an 8-month-old male mixed breed dog died shortly after arrival to the United States from complications secondary to spirocercosis, despite having been deemed healthy and approved for international travel. Four weeks following arrival, the dog developed mild tachypnea and diarrhea. Physical examination revealed moderate pyrexia with generalized cerebellar ataxia, moderate anemia, a mature neutrophilia, and severe panhypoproteinemia. Packed red blood cells were administered. The dog was diagnosed with pyothorax and decompensated with septic shock shortly thereafter. Necropsy revealed severe transmural esophagitis with intralesional Spirocerca lupi. Evaluation of the brain revealed cerebellar hypoplasia, and polymerase chain reaction of brain tissue was positive for canine parvovirus. Despite receiving a clean bill of health in its country of origin, this patient ultimately had evidence of 2 different infectious processes that pre-dated its arrival into the United States. This study aimed to characterize multiple aspects of colonic innate defenses and microbiome factors in B. hyodysenteriae-infected pigs that accompany clinical presentation of hemorrhagic diarrhea. We examined colonic mucus barrier modifications, leukocyte infiltration, cathelicidin expression, as well as microbiome composition. We showed that B. hyodysenteriae infection caused microscopic hemorrhagic colitis with abundant neutrophil infiltration in the colonic lamina propria and lumen, with minor macrophage infiltration. Mucus hypersecretion with abundant sialylated mucus in the colon, as well as mucosal colonization by [Acetivibrio] ethanolgignens, Lachnospiraceae, and Campylobacter were pathognomonic of B. hyodysenteriae infection. These findings demonstrate that B. hyodysenteriae produces clinical disease through multiple effects on host defenses, involving alterations of mucosal innate immunity and microbiota. The purpose of this study was to elucidate antibacterial mechanism of protocatechualdehyde (PCA) extracted from the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza towards Y. enterocolitica, and to investigate effects of PCA on key virulence factors associated with human infection. Present results indicated that PCA exerted its antibacterial activity against Y. enterocolitica mainly by the rapid rise of intracellular reactive oxygen species, leading to change in permeability and integrity of cell membrane, and ultimately decline of membrane potential and intracellular ATP. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopic analysis revealed that Y. enterocolitica presented gradually shrinkage in length and partial wrinkles upon PCA treatment. PCA also effectively decreased motility, biofilm formation, quorum sensing in a dose-dependent manner without affecting bacterial growth. Further, at SICs, PCA substantially suppressed the adhesion and invasion of Y. enterocolitica to HT-29 cells and the downregulation of essential virulence factor-encoding genes unveiled impaired virulence. Overall, the findings revealed the potential of PCA as an alternative antibacterial agent to combat Y. enterocolitica contamination and infections.
