    We tested the hypothesis that differences in ventilatory ([Formula see text]) or convection requirement ([Formula see text]/[Formula see text]O2) response to hypoxia would be correlated with differences in hemoglobin (Hb) oxygen affinity between two strains of rats, as they have been shown to be among several species of mammals, birds and reptiles. Here, we report on a previously unknown letter by the Physicist and Nobel Laureate Albert Einstein that was written in October 1949. It briefly addresses the work of von Frisch and also queries how understanding animal perception and navigation may lead to innovations in physics. We discuss records proving that Einstein and von Frisch met in April 1949 when von Frisch visited the USA to present a lecture on bees at Princeton University. In the historical context of Einstein’s theories and thought experiments, we discuss some more recent discoveries of animal sensory capabilities alien to us humans and potentially valuable for bio-inspired design improvements. We also address the orientation of animals like migratory birds mentioned by Einstein 70 years ago, which pushes the boundaries of our understanding nature, both its biology and physics.

    This article describes afirst use of an electronic case-based assessment tool in undergraduate palliative care education. It describes the development of the tool presenting strengths and shortcomings in order to contribute to an innovative design of assessment tools in medical education.

    An electronic (virtual) case-based assessment tool (the virtual palliative patient, vPp) was developed. Palliative care levels of knowledge, skills and attitude of students were tested at acomputer workplace as avoluntary and non-performance-relevant pilot project at four faculties.

    On average the students achieved 80% of the points using the vPp tool, which is below the average score of 91% achieved in the regular examination. In particular, the free text task on reflection of dealing with the patient’s death wish caused uncertainty, while multiple choice questions and an interactive conversation sequence were perceived as relatively easy. Technical problems were also identified in the evaluation but overall the concement tool, which can then be fed with new contents.

    We analyzed structural brain images of 163 subjects diagnosed with MS acquired at two different sites. Participants were followed up for 2-6 years, with disability progression defined according to the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) increment at follow-up. T2-weighted lesion load (T2LL), thalamic and cerebellar gray matter (GM) volumes, fractional anisotropy of the normal appearing white matter were calculated at baseline and included in supervised machine learning classifiers. Age, sex, phenotype, EDSS at baseline, therapy and time to follow-up period were also included. Classes were labeled as stable or progressed disability. Participants were randomly chosen from both sites to build a sample including 50% patients showing disability progression and 50% patients being stable. One-thousand machine learning classifiers were applied to the resulting sample, and after testing for overfitting, classifier confusion matrix, relative metrics and feature importance were evaluated.

    At follow-up, 36% of participants showed disability progression. The classifier with the highest resulting metrics had accuracy of 0.79, area under the true positive versus false positive rates curve of 0.81, sensitivity of 0.90 and specificity of 0.71. T2LL, thalamic volume, disability at baseline and administered therapy were identified as important features in predicting disability progression. Classifiers built on radiological features had higher accuracy than those built on clinical features.

Muscle-specific kinase-antibodies (MuSK-ABs) are detected in ~ 6% of MG, but data on outcome of MuSK-MCs are still lacking. We made a subgroup analysis of patients who presented with MC with either acetylcholine-receptor-antibody positive MG (AchR-MG) or MuSK-MG between 2006 and 2015 in a retrospective German multicenter study. We identified 19 MuSK-AB associated MCs in 15 patients and 161 MCs in 144 patients with AchR-ABs only. In contrast to patients with AchR-AB, MuSK-AB patients were more often female (p = 0.05, OR = 2.74) and classified as Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America-class IV before crisis (p = 0.04, OR = 3.25).
