The addition of a range of micro- and nano-particles to high-performance concrete has been the focus of recent research. At present, studies are mainly aimed at designing customised mortars, providing them with specific properties for each application. Improving the durability of mortars is one of the main objectives in such research, as a result of increasing environmental concern. The research presented herein analyses the synergistic effect of nanosilica and metakaolin as additives on the service life of cement-based mortars subject to aggressive environments (i.e., chloride exposure) at early ages. The effects of the additives on the durability properties of submerged samples after two and three days of curing were analysed. Tests were conducted on several different properties resistivity, porosity, mechanical properties, chloride diffusion, and service life. It is observed that metakaolin and nanosilica exhibit a synergistic effect as additives, which is related to porosity refinement and chloride ion binding capacity, which contributes to enhanced resistance against chloride penetration from very early ages.A novel fluorescence-sensing pathway for epinephrine (EP) detection was investigated. The ceramic-based miniature biosensor was developed through the immobilization of an enzyme (laccase, tyrosinase) on a polymer-poly-(2,6-di([2,2′-bithiophen]-5-yl)-4-(5-hexylthiophen-2-yl)pyridine), based on low temperature cofired ceramics technology (LTCC). The detection procedure was based on the oxidation of the substrate, i.e., in the presence of the enzyme. An alternative enzyme-free system utilized the formation of a colorful complex between Fe2+ ions and epinephrine molecules. With the optimized conditions, the analytical performance illustrated high sensitivity and selectivity in a broad linear range with a detection limit of 0.14-2.10 nM. Moreover, the strategy was successfully used for an EP injection test with labeled pharmacological samples.. Background and Objectives Cirrhosis is a liver disease that causes about one million deaths annually worldwide. The estimated cirrhosis prevalence ranges from 4.5-9.5% in the general population. Up to 40% of cirrhotic patients are asymptomatic and may be diagnosed late. Studies have described the importance of the functions of the liver and autonomic nervous system (ANS) and their relationship. There is limited information available on non-alcoholic cirrhosis and heart rate variability (HRV), which is a measure of the ANS. This study aimed to evaluate cardiac autonomic modulation through HRV in non-alcoholic cirrhosis individuals reported in previous observational and clinical trial studies. Materials and Methods We performed a systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement using the Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases. Five studies were identified and reviewed. Results HRV was decreased in patients with non-alcoholic cirrhosis, even in the first stage. Conclusions HRV could be used as a complementary method to improve both the diagnosis and prognosis of non-alcoholic cirrhosis. The atmospheric correction of satellite images based on radiative transfer calculations is a prerequisite for many remote sensing applications. The software package ATCOR, developed at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is a versatile atmospheric correction software, capable of processing data acquired by many different optical satellite sensors. Based on this well established algorithm, a new Python-based atmospheric correction software has been developed to generate L2A products of Sentinel-2, Landsat-8, and of new space-based hyperspectral sensors such as DESIS (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer) and EnMAP (Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program). This paper outlines the underlying algorithms of PACO, and presents the validation results by comparing L2A products generated from Sentinel-2 L1C images with in situ (AERONET and RadCalNet) data within VNIR-SWIR spectral wavelengths range.Ultrasonic testing is a useful approach for quantifying the flaws in mechanical components. The height of the flaws in ultrasonic angle beam testing is closely related to the calibration value of the probe refraction angle. In order to reduce the calibration error, some ignored data during the traditional calibration process are reanalyzed and fused to determine the refraction angle. Both arithmetical measurement fusion method and weighted measurement fusion method are applied and compared. Monte Carlo simulation is used to estimate the probability distribution of the refraction angle and obtain the optimal refraction angle weights. Experiments were carried out to verify the results of Monte Carlo simulation. The applicability of data fusion on refraction angles is investigated. It was found in the study that the data fused with the refraction angle is helpful for measuring the height of flaws.A targeted metabolomics LC-ESI-QqQ-MS/MS application for the determination of cocoa shell based on 15 non-polar key metabolites was developed, validated according to recognized guidelines, and used to predict the cocoa shell content in various cocoa products. For the cocoa shell prediction, different PLSR models based on different cocoa shell calibration series were developed and their suitability and prediction quality were compared. By analysing samples from different origins and harvest years with known shell content, the prediction model could be confirmed. The predicted shell content could be verified with a deviation of about 1% cocoa shell. The presented method demonstrates the suitability of the targeted application of metabolomic profiling for the determination of cocoa shell and its applicability in routine analysis is discussed.CAS3 is a newly cloned cytosolic β-class carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) from the filamentous ascomycete Sordaria macrospora. This enzyme has a high catalytic activity for the physiological CO2 hydration reaction and herein, we report the inhibition profile of CAS3 with anions and small molecules. this website The most effective CAS3 anions/small molecule inhibitors were diethyl-dithiocarbamate, sulfamide, sulfamate, phenyl boronic and phenyl arsonic acids, with KIs in the range of 0.89 mM-97 µM. Anions such as iodide, the pseudohalides, bicarbonate, carbonate, nitrate, nitrite, hydrogensulfide, stannate, selenate, tellurate, tetraborate, perrhenate, perruthenate, selenocyanide and trithiocarbonate were low millimolar CAS3 inhibitors. The light halides, sulfate, hydrogensulfite, peroxydisulfate, diphosphate, divanadate, perchlorate, tetrafluoroborate, fluorosulfonate and iminodisulfonate did not significantly inhibit this enzyme. These data may be useful for developing antifungals based on CA inhibition, considering the fact that many of the inhibitors reported here may be used as lead molecules and, by incorporating the appropriate organic scaffolds, potent nanomolar inhibitors could be developed.
