The Mediterranean diet, which is rich in olive oil, nuts, and fish, is considered healthy and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Here, we compared the transcriptome from the blood of subjects with diets supplemented with olives, nuts, or long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and identified the genes differentially expressed. The dietary genes obtained were subjected to network analysis to determine the main pathways, as well as the transcription factors and microRNA interaction network to elucidate their regulation. Finally, a gene-associated disease interaction network was performed.

We identified several genes whose expression is altered after the intake of components of the Mediterranean diets compared to controls. ASP2215 chemical structure These genes were associated with infection and inflammation. Transcription factors and miRNAs were identified as potential regulators of the dietary genes. Interestingly, caspase 1 and sialophorin are differentially expressed in the opposite direction after the intake of supplements compareean diet may also be beneficial in reducing the risk of dementia.Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by incompletely reversible airflow limitation and seriously threatens the health of humans due to its high morbidity and mortality. Naringenin, as a natural flavanone, has shown various potential pharmacological activities against multiple pathological stages of COPD, but available studies are scattered and unsystematic. Thus, we combined literature review with network pharmacology analysis to evaluate the potential therapeutic effects of naringenin on COPD and predict its underlying mechanisms, expecting to provide a promising tactic for clinical treatment of COPD.Phytophagous insects, including Asian citrus psyllids (Diaphorina citri Kuwayama), use multiple sensory modalities (vision, olfaction, and gustation,) to locate and accept host plants. We explored incorporation of several sensory cues into a multi-modal attract-and-kill device (AK device) using a three-dimensional shape to increase visibility, as well as elements of color, attractant, phagostimulant, UV reflectant, and toxicant. Attraction of adult D. citri to the device was mediated by a combination of a highly reflective yellow cylinder, a UV reflectant compound (magnesium oxide), and an odorant blend as a short-range attractant. The device surface was coated with a slow-release wax matrix (SPLAT™) augmented with a phagostimulant consisting of a 3-component blend (formic acid, acetic acid, and para-cymene) and an insecticide (β-cyfluthrin). Psyllids landing on the device attempted to feed from the wax matrix, became intoxicated, died, and fell from the device. The device remained fully active over a period of 12 weeks partly because dead psyllids or nontargets did not adhere to the surface as occurs on adhesive yellow sticky cards, the industry standard. Laboratory and field assays showed that the device attracted and killed significantly more adult D. citri than ordinary yellow sticky cards. This device or a future iteration based on the design elements of this device is expected to contribute to sustainable and environmentally appropriate management of D. citri by exploiting the psyllid’s innate behavioral responses to visual, olfactory, and gustatory stimuli.Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) following nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease is being increasingly recognized, especially in countries where tuberculosis is not endemic, with an incidence rate of 3.9-16.7%. NTM lung disease has been identified as a predictor of mortality in CPA patients. The major risk factors for NTM-associated CPA include fibrocavitary NTM lung disease, the presence of pulmonary emphysema, and high-dose corticosteroid use. The onset of CPA is 1.5-7 years following the diagnosis of NTM lung disease. The diagnosis can be made using standard criteria; however, serological diagnosis using Aspergillus precipitin has demonstrated a higher sensitivity and specificity when compared with fungal culture from respiratory specimens. Treatment is challenging since rifampicin and oral triazoles should not be used concomitantly. The prognosis is poor, and the factors associated with worse prognosis are corticosteroid use and high C-reactive protein level.Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have been associated with various degenerative diseases, including intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) often occurs in young patients, although the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. The aim of this work was to generate RNA deep sequencing data of peripheral blood samples from patients suffering from LDH, identify circulating miRNAs, and analyze them using bioinformatics applications. Serum was collected from 10 patients with LDH (Disc Degeneration Group); 10 patients without LDH served as the Control Group. RNA sequencing analysis identified 73 differential circulating miRNAs (p less then 0.05) between the Disc Degeneration Group and Control Group. Gene ontology enrichment analysis (p less then 0.05) showed that these differentially expressed miRNAs were associated with extracellular matrix, damage reactions, inflammatory reactions, and regulation of apoptosis. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis showed that the differentially expressed genes were involved in diverse signaling pathways. The profile of miR-766-3p, miR-6749-3p, and miR-4632-5p serum miRNAs was significantly enriched (p less then 0.05) in multiple pathways associated with IVD degeneration. miR-766-3p, miR-6749-3p, and miR-4632-5p signature from serum may serve as a noninvasive diagnostic biomarker for LHD manifestation of IVD degeneration. Furthermore, several dysregulated miRNAs may be involved in the pathogenesis of IVD degeneration. Further study is needed to confirm the functional role of the identified miRNAs.Indoor Positioning Systems (IPSs) are used to locate mobile devices in indoor environments. Model-based IPSs have the advantage of not having an exhausting training and signal characterization of the environment, as required by the fingerprint technique. However, most model-based IPSs are done using fixed model parameters, treating the whole scenario as having a uniform signal propagation. This might work for most small scale experiments, but not for larger scenarios. In this paper, we propose PoDME (Positioning using Dynamic Model Estimation), a model-based IPS that uses dynamic parameters that are estimated based on the location the signal was sent. More specifically, we use the set of anchor nodes that received the signal sent by the mobile node and their signal strengths, to estimate the best local values for the log-distance model parameters. Also, since our solution depends highly on the selected anchor nodes to use on the position computation, we propose a novel method for choosing the three best anchor nodes.
