    Ultrasound has revealed cross-sectional nerve area (CSA) reduction in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but little is known about the sonographic nerve texture beyond CSA alterations. In a large cohort of 177 ALS patients and 57 control subjects, we investigated the covariance and disease-specific signature of several sonographic texture features of the median and ulnar nerves and their relationship to the patients’ clinical characteristics. ALS patients showed atrophic nerves, a loss of the intranerve structures’ echoic contrast, elevated coarseness, and a trend toward lower cluster shading compared with controls. Natural Product Library A reduction in intranerve echoic contrast was related to longer disease duration and poorer functional status in ALS. Sonographic texture markers point toward a significant reorganization of the deep nerve microstructure in ALS. Future studies will be needed to further substantiate the markers’ potential to assess peripheral nerve alterations in ALS.The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections in Bulgaria, to characterize the genetic diversity of the RSV strains, and to perform amino acid sequence analysis of the RSV G protein. Clinical, epidemiological data and nasopharyngeal swabs were prospectively collected from children aged less than 5 years presenting with acute respiratory infections from October 2016 to September 2018. Real-time polymerase chain reaction for 12 respiratory viruses, and sequencing, phylogenetic, and amino acid analyses of the RSV G gene/protein were performed. Of the 875 children examined, 645 (73.7%) were positive for at least one viral respiratory pathogen. RSV was the most commonly detected virus (26.2%), followed by rhinoviruses (15%), influenza A (H3N2) (9.7%), adenoviruses (9%), bocaviruses (7.2%), human metapneumovirus (6.1%), parainfluenza viruses 1/2/3 (5.8%), influenza type B (5.5%), and A(H1N1)pdm09 (3.4%). The detection rate for RSV varied across two winter seasons (36.7% vs 20.3%). RSV-B cases outnumbered those of the RSV-A throughout the study period. RSV was the most common virus detected in patients with bronchiolitis (45.1%) and pneumonia (24%). Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all the sequenced RSV-A strains belonged to the ON1 genotype and the RSV-B strains were classified as BA9 genotype. Amino acid substitutions at 15 and 22 positions of the HVR-2 were identified compared with the ON1 and BA prototype strains, respectively. This study revealed the leading role of RSV as a causative agent of serious respiratory illnesses in early childhood, year-on-year fluctuations in RSV incidence, the dominance of RSV-B, and relatively low genetic diversity in the circulating RSV strains.Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) garnered scientific attention in early February following publication of reports showing in vitro activity of chloroquine (CQ) against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). While studies are mixed on this topic, the therapeutic effect of HCQ or CQ still need more valid clinical evidence. In this descriptive observational study, we aimed to discuss the treatment response of HCQ in COVID-19 infected patients and 30 cases were included. The demographic, treatment, laboratory parameters of C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) before and after HCQ therapy and clinical outcome in the 30 patients with COVID-19 were assessed. To evaluate the effect of mediation time point, we also divided these cases into two groups, patients began administrated with HCQ within 7 days hospital (defined as early delivery group) and 7 days after hospital (defined as later delivery group). We found that, the elevated IL-6, a risk factor in severe patients were reduced to normal level after HCQ treatment. More importantly, patients treated with HCQ at the time of early hospital recovered faster than those who treated later or taken as second line choose for their obvious shorter hospitalization time. In summary, early use of HCQ was better than later use and the effect of IL-6 and CRP level cannot be ruled out.The effect of Editan (Lasianthera africana) leaf inclusive diet (ELD) on neuronal cholinesterases (ChE), ecto-5′-nucleotidase, and endogenous antioxidant indices [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH)] in cyclophosphamide (CYP)-administered albino rats were investigated. Thirty male albino Wistar rats were dissevered appropriately (n = 6). Group I-normal control rats (NC), II-untreated CYP-administered rats, III-CYP-administered rats pre-treated with donepezil (DON), group IV-CYP-administered rats fed ELD, and V-normal rats fed with ELD for 21 days. Results obtained revealed that CYP-administered rats significantly (p less then .05) had elevated activities of ChE, ecto-5′-nucleotidase and thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS), and concomitantly decreased in the antioxidant indices. However, pre-treatment with either DON or ELD reversed these effects, thereby eliciting a therapeutic effect which could be linked to the rich polyphenol and alkaloid constituents in the studied leaf, and could be responsible for the potential ethnopharmacological actions of the ELD in the management neurodegeneration. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Currently, the use of plant-food to control diseased conditions due to their phytochemicals has been explored, most especially, the indigenous edible vegetables from the Southwestern part of Nigeria. “Editan” leafy vegetable scientifically known as Lasianthera africana is commonly used in soups preparation and in folklore for the management of some human ailments. Editan leaf is a rich source of alkaloid and phenolic compounds, which could be used to treat and or manage neurological diseases. This study, therefore, unravels the fact that the studied leafy vegetable possesses therapeutic potentials toward the management of neurological disorders.In Latin America, one of the key tasks of Community and Liberation Psychology has been to recover the memories of marginalized and excluded communities that have experienced multiple pasts marked by political violence. In Chile, researchers have focused on poor urban neighborhoods, where the question of how memories are transmitted in areas where conflicts and violence are still present has been overlooked. In this context, the following article aims to analyze the ways in which memories are transmitted in a neighborhood that has a long organizational history in the struggle against social inequalities; while at the same time being classified as a critical area by the state due to its current levels of violence and social conflict. The researchers led a 3-year case study from an ethnographic perspective, and applied a collaborative methodology that brought together the research team and the members of a territorial organization. The analysis is based on 72 interviews, 5 conversation groups and ethnographic observation.
