A new family of liquid π-donors, lipophilic dihydrophenazine (DHP) derivatives, show remarkably high π-electron-donor property which exhibit supramolecular alternating copolymerization with 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), giving ionic charge-transfer (ICT) complexes. The ICT complexes form distinct columnar liquid crystalline (LC) mesophases with well-defined alternating molecular alignment as demonstrated by UV-Vis-NIR spectra, IR spectra, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. These liquid crystalline ICT complexes display unique phase transitions in response to mechanical stress the columnar ICT phase is converted to macroscopically oriented smectic-like mesophases upon applying shear force. Although there exist reports on the formation of ICT in the crystalline state, this study provides the first rational identification of ICT mesophases based on the spectroscopic and structural data. The liquid crystalline ICT phases are generated by strong electronic interactions between the liquid π-donors and solid acceptors. It clearly shows the significance of simultaneous fulfillment of strong π-donating ability and ordered self-assembly of the stable ICT pairs. The flexible, stimuli-responsive structural transformation of the ICT complexes offer a new perspective for designing processable CT systems with controlled hierarchical self-assembly and electronic structures.Patrinia scabiosaefolia is a medical and edible Chinese herb with high nutritional and medicinal value. The continuing study of its chemical constituents led to the discovery of nine unique iridoids and iridoid glycosides, including three new iridoids (1-3) and six previously unknown irioid glycosides (5-10), and one known compound (4). Among them, compound 1 was a deformed iridoid, while compounds 3, 5-7, and 10 formed a new ring in their skeletons which was uncommon in this genus. For compound 3, the new ring existed between C-3 and C-10, while a 1,3-dioxane appeared between C-7 and C-10 in compounds 5-7 and 10. Moreover, compound 10 was a bis-iridoid glycoside, which was the first reported in P. BlasticidinS scabiosaefolia. And the sugar of irioid glycosides (5-10) was glucose at C-11, except in 9 which had a 5-deoxyglucose moiety. All their structures were confirmed based on the extensive spectroscopic analysis, including IR, UV, HR-ESI-MS, ECD, and 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments. Their cytotoxic activities against HL-60, A-549, SMMC-7721, MCF-7, SW480 were also tested. To synthesize well-defined poly (α-amino acid)s (PAAs), ring opening polymerizations (ROP) of cyclic monomers of α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs) and N-thiocarboxyanhydrides (NTAs) are most widely used. In this mini-review, we summarize the mechanism details of the monomer preparation and ROP. The present study used density functional theory calculations to reveal the mechanisms together with experimental phenomena in the past decades. Detailed discussion includes normal amine mechanism and the selectivity of the initiators bearing various nucleophilic groups.COVID-19 mainly spreads through cough or sneeze droplets produced by an infected person. The viral particles are mostly present in the oral cavity. The risk of contracting COVID-19 is high in the dental profession due to the nature of procedures involved that produce aerosols. Along with other measures to limit the risk of infection, pre-procedural mouth rinses are beneficial in reducing the viral particles in the oral cavity. In this study, the antiviral efficacy of essential oil components has been determined specifically against SARS-CoV-2 by molecular docking and conceptual DFT approach. Based on the binding affinities of the components against the receptor binding domain of the S1 glycoprotein, cuminal, carvacrol, myrtanol, and pinocarveol were found to be highly active. The molecular descriptor values obtained through conceptual DFT also indicated the above-mentioned components to be active based on the correlation between the structure and the activity of the compounds. Therefore, pre-procedural mouth rinses with these components included may be specifically suitable for dental procedures during the COVID-19 period.Cinobufagin is used as a traditional Chinese medicine for cancer therapy. However, it has some disadvantages, such as poor water solubility, short circulating half-life, and low bioavailability. In the present study, a targeted delivery and smart responsive polydopamine (PDA)-based nanomedicine for delivering cinobufagin was rationally designed to improve the anticancer efficacy of the compound for the treatment of lung cancer. The modification of the nanomedicine using folic acid first mediated tumor targeting via the interaction between folic acid and its receptors on tumor cells. After lysosomes escape, the PDA nanomedicine was triggered by the low pH and released its cargo into the tumor microenvironment. The nanomedicine had a better therapeutic effect against lung cancer when used in combination with photothermal therapy. Compared with other nanomedicines used with photothermal therapy, this nanocarrier was not only sensitive to biologically low pH levels for on-demand drug release, but was also biodegradable, breaking down into biocompatible terminal products. Therefore, the proposed drug delivery system with targeted delivery and smart release demonstrated potential as a multifunctional nanoplatform that can enhance the bioavailability and reduce the side effects of chemotherapeutic agents. Background The social environment, comprised of social support, social burden, and quality of interactions, influences a range of health outcomes, including mental health. Passive audio data collection on mobile phones (e.g., episodic recording of the auditory environment without requiring any active input from the phone user) enables new opportunities to understand the social environment. We evaluated the use of passive audio collection on mobile phones as a window into the social environment while conducting a study of mental health among adolescent and young mothers in Nepal. Methods We enrolled 23 adolescent and young mothers who first participated in qualitative interviews to describe their social support and identify sounds potentially associated with that support. Then, episodic recordings were collected for 2 weeks from the mothers using an app to record 30 s of audio every 15 min from 4 A.M. to 9 P.M. Audio data were processed and classified using a pretrained model. Each classification category was accompanied by an estimated accuracy score.
