Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The blue-and-gold macaw is a beautiful bird that is known for its stunning visual appeal. Its social nature makes it an excellent companion for families. It is also a natural at interacting and can learn the language and tricks quickly.
Our own blue and gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello to water, apple and more. These birds can live over 50 years in captivity.
Ziggy Our Scarlet Macaw are a great companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are best suited to families with a variety of members. They are prone to becoming bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren’t interacting with them enough. Macaws that aren’t socialized can become aggressive and may even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined to ensure that the macaw doesn’t feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that love to play, climb and interact. They require at least 2 to 3 hours per day out of their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a great pet, they also make loving pets for children.
Despite their adorable nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a distraction to those living close by. They can make high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be startled by their roar.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are hard to distinguish. Because of this, the only way to determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the birds’ sex is known the breeding process can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it is important that the owner has patience and understands that this is not something to be undertaken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help to correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita’s Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists hoped that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to go back to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita – the Dolphin Company – have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington’s westcoast, where she could spend the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean, not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and bond with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita’s release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. The activists include Ric O’Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita’s Diet
As with any animal species in captivity, a captive blue and gold macaw’s health is dependent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require premium food and lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In captivity, a well-fed macaw is likely to live up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird requires plenty of space to move around and exercise.
A blue and golden macaw is a lovely companion who is also very intelligent. They are known to quickly learn new words and tricks and they are highly adaptable. This bird is ideal for those just beginning their journey to an avian companionship.
Additionally to that, this bird requires plenty of interaction, and will bond with her human family members quickly. Macaws of gold and blue frequently make loud screams that include “flock calls,” which is part of their natural behavior. They can also squabble and chew on their food at times, especially when they are frustrated or bored. It is important for prospective pet owners to keep in mind that this kind of behavior is normal and ought to be expected.
Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the condition of Lolita and her health however there are many questions. Akromas and others who have supervised or trained Lolita’s health in the past are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring, and squid daily.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. Although the species is in danger living in a tank that many believe is too small.
Lolita’s Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health continues to decline. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare organizations who want to see her released back to the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that left her in a vulnerable state.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita’s current health. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is aging quickly and her health is declining.
It is not known what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn’t required to divulge this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play a part in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many are hopeful that she could be closer than ever before to an unspoiled life. Seaquarium’s new owner Seaquarium has pledged to relocate the whale from her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean, where she can take a deep dive in the ocean, perhaps even reunited with her orca mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
